Artist Highlight: Masha Volnova
When it comes to bold, vivid prints, it’s (say it with us) Masha, Masha, Masha! This month, we’re excited to highlight talented artist Masha Volnova, founder (and queen) of Pip & Lo.
Masha Volnova’s artistic journey began in childhood, where her creativity found expression in various forms—drawing, painting and even building intricate dollhouses from everyday materials. Her passion for art led her to earn a BFA degree, and she initially pursued a career as a graphic designer. However, as her family grew, Masha decided to take a step back from the corporate world to focus on her new role as a mother. During those years, she discovered the world of fabric and surface pattern design, which quickly became her new creative outlet.
From Hobby to Career
Masha’s transition from graphic design to textile artistry was serendipitous. What began as a hobby—sewing accessories for her daughter—soon blossomed into a full-fledged career. Her background in graphic design continued to influence her work, particularly her affinity for clean, crisp lines. When starting a new design, Masha always begins with freehand drawing, allowing her creativity to flow naturally. These initial sketches are then transformed into digital illustrations, marrying the organic with the precise.
A World of Endless Possibilities
For Masha, inspiration is everywhere. She is deeply influenced by the natural world, the vibrant energy of new experiences and the people she meets or sees every day. Her endless and ever-evolving sources of inspiration keep her work fresh and innovative—something we’ve fallen in with at Geometry! Masha is particularly drawn to the work of Suzy Zuzek, the textile designer behind many iconic Lilly Pulitzer prints. Her bold and daring approach to design, coupled with her story of unrecognized brilliance, resonates with Masha and influences her own vibrant and offbeat aesthetic.
Balancing Discipline and Playfulness
Masha’s creative process is a delicate balance of discipline and playfulness. She enjoys the act of creating as a way to unwind and take a break from the demands of everyday life. Her designs are known for their bold, graphic elements and daring use of color, reflecting her innovative spirit and commitment to pushing artistic boundaries. Each piece she creates is a testament to her belief in the importance of avoiding staleness and boredom in art, always striving for something new and different.
Committed to Innovation
Looking ahead, Masha is excited about the innovative and future-oriented direction of the brands she collaborates with, like Geometry House. She appreciates their support for evolving artists and their commitment to pushing the boundaries of design. As she continues to explore new avenues for her creativity, she remains dedicated to her craft, always seeking out new sources of inspiration and ways to evolve as an artist.
In her newest collab with Geometry, Masha explores bold, colorful prints with a little whimsy and a lot of personality—and we’re dying over the entire collection. Get to know Masha—and her latest household art pieces—now.
