Merritt Baynes is a surface pattern designer and illustrator based out of Crozet, Virginia in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. She holds a bachelor's degree in Landscape Architecture from Virginia Tech, and practiced in the field of planning and landscape architecture for over a decade before pursuing surface pattern design full time in 2016.

Merritt's most fulfilling moments as a landscape architect were when she had the opportunity to create colorful renderings and visions for her clients, and it was out of this passion that Scarlette Soleil was created. Her passion for color, texture, and “disheveled” lines can be found throughout her work. Her work ranges from abstract prints to imaginative florals. A reflection of her current state of consciousness, her work can at times be wild and frenetic and other times more controlled, but always free spirited and flowing.
