Julianne Haness: an Artistic Evolution Julianne Haness: an Artistic Evolution

There’s no shortage of contemporary artists in the world, but Julianne Haness of J Marie Creates is one we’ve long admired for her evolution, ingenuity and creativity. From her time as a muralist and portrait artist to her transformative journey into surface pattern design, Julianne’s story resonates with many who found solace and reinvention during the global quarantine.

An Unexpected Turn in Artistic Pursuits

Julianne's initial foray into the arts was as a portrait artist and muralist, with the 20s being a period filled with art classes. A self-proclaimed "hobbyist artist," her entire perspective shifted during the 2020 quarantine. When her husband introduced her to Skillshare, expecting her to delve into traditional Graphic Design, she took a turn into the mesmerizing world of Surface Pattern Design.

This new avenue captivated her, leading to a rigorous challenge: creating a seamless pattern in Procreate every day for 100 days. Her art from this period can still be seen on her Instagram, which reflects her growth as an artist as well as her starting place and inspiration along the way. By continually experimenting – and embracing failures – Julianne honed a unique skillset on Procreate as well as a distinct artistic voice.

Life as an Artist and Mother

Balancing a full-time career as an artist with the responsibilities of being a mother to three children is no easy task. With her youngest born just last year, Julianne often finds herself sandwiched between her passion and her daily responsibilities. Even so, her commitment to art remains unwavering. The early hours before sunrise find her, coffee in hand, pouring her ideas onto her iPad.

In May, Julianne extended her passion and expertise to others by hosting a live zoom pattern tutorial for the Pattern Observer Blog. The positive feedback inspired her to set her sights on a new project: to curate a design tutorial series for budding artists by the end of 2023.

Inspiration for the State Flower Collection

Each of Julianne's creations represents her unique artistic style. This month, we launched Julianne’s whimsical state floral collection, inspired by her sister's move from Southern California to Texas. When her sister told her how much she loved the Texas Bluebonnets around her new home, an idea took root (pun intended) for Julianne.

Check out the collection and you’ll see many state flowers blooming, from the Texas bluebonnets to California poppies, which represent the sisters’ current states.

When asked about her creative process, Julianne highlights her methodology, which is both structured and fluid. She takes inspiration from platforms like Instagram and Pinterest to curate colors and styles. The actual design takes shape in Procreate, with Adobe Illustrator assisting in the final touches. And her favorite part? “Seeing the final product,” Julianne confesses, revealing that seeing her floral collection on Geometry towels moved her to tears.
