Katherine Berkeley
My process is very tactile and holistic. I create a solid base stemming from an idea or a sketch. Then I’ll build layers, some textured others marked. Sometimes, there are four or five layers before my painting begins to speak to me. Color plays an important role in my creative process. Their selections are usually intuitive but sometimes predetermined. When combined, the painting becomes alive and tells a story. I’m inspired by the colors I mix creating bold exaggerations and personal favorites. Texture plays a big part of this equation: mark making tells a distinctive story. It’s my interpretation of mid century aesthetics working harmoniously with my palette that helps me to create textured, layered and colorful paintings. When I put it all together I feel joy and a sense of wonder. I have taken ordinary objects and ideas and turned them into works of art.
